Jury rules for Apple in patent case vs Samsung |

The decision is out.  Samsung will have to pay approximately $1.05 billion in damages to the iPhone maker.  That is one whopping amount, beyond the comprehension of an ordinary person like me who has yet to own either of these phones.  Yet, even if this figure is obviously Samsung’s problem, not ours, this ruling could have a resounding effect on us, consumers, who plan to have either phone in the future.  Samsung said in an official statement that “Today’s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but a loss for the American consumer.  It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices.”

And Samsung does have a point.  Even if I am still in the planning stage (read: about to save to buy an Android phone.  I am so behind, I know!), I would probably expect more expensive Android phones as they increase their costs to cover licensing fees to Apple.

As what one analyst said, “When companies turn to litigation rather than innovation, consumers lose.”

Or Apple might lower their prices, maybe?

Philippine National Heroes Day

In grade school "Sibika at Kultura" (Civics and Culture), it has been the norm to emphasize the idea and importance of heroes in the crystallizing of our national identity.  Historically, our country has seen countless heroes that have become lost or forgotten; men and women who gave up their lives to save and mold our country into a free nation. The goal of National Heroes day, which is commemorated on August 26, aside from remembering the 1896 Cry of Pugad Lawin by the Katipunan which fueled the Philippine Revolution, is to bring back these forgotten heroes to the national consciousness and to inspire our youth to rediscover these lost heroes from the past.

As we bask in the joy of having a long weekend, let us not forget our country’s version of “Supermen”, “Spidermen”, and “Captain Barbells”.  Let them be an inspiration to our youth to strive for a greater, more progressive country.

Developing and Nurturing Gifted Children

Raising a gifted child can be delightful and daunting.  Does a child need to get amazingly high scores to be considered as gifted? READ Developing and Nurturing Gifted Children, my article with Triond.  Special thanks to my model, JASMINE JULIAN.

The Hunger Games Fever

On Friday, Amazon released a report that the Hunger Games Trilogy have knocked out the Harry Potter series as Amazon's top-selling books of all time.  What is stupefying (I still love you more, Harry Potter, I swear)is that it only took Hunger Games four years to topple the Harry Potter series. The Hunger Games books are consistently in the top ten list in print and Kindle sales.

Anyway, call it a Hunger Games weekend.  With the DVD coming out on August 18, 2012 and with the book toppling my much more loved Harry Potter (come and relive the magical experience at Pottermore), the following are interesting facts about the book, the movie and its stars!!!

1.  Who gave Katniss her Mockingjay pin?

In the novel, Madge, the District 12 mayor's daughter, gave Katniss the pin.  In the movie, it was Prim, Katniss' younger sister, who gave her the pin.

(My daughters wanted to have this pin badly.  I got them here).

2. I didn't know Gale is Miley Cyrus' fiance!!!

Miley and Liam Hemsworth (Gale in the Hunger Games) met on the set of Nicholas' Spark's "The Last Song."

3.Background Story.

The Hunger Games was inspired in part by Suzanne Collins' childhood experience of watching on tv and being greatly affected with the Vietnam war and the Greek myth of Theseus.  However, Katniss' story  came to be when the author was doing some late night channel surfing and was switching between reality tv shows and the Iraq war coverage.

4. Jennifer Lawrence took three days to say yes, she will be Katniss.

5. Peeta loves Katniss?

Peeta must have loved Katniss way before they were together as tributes of District 12.  Peeta, who was the District 12 baker's son, burned a loaf of bread intentionally, and threw it at Katniss, who was at her wit's ends on what to feed her hungry family.

6.  Who did not covet the Katniss role???

Around 30 actresses aged 14 to 24 have auditioned for Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen (and nope, thank God, Kristen Stewart is not among them), including Chloe Grace Moretz,Abigail Breslin and Emma Roberts.  Winter Bone Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence won the part and was described to be "an amazing Katniss.  Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness and power."

7.  President Snow smells like...

I barely remember seeing President Snow in the movie, except maybe that part where he was tending on his roses. In the book, this vile creature would be described as reeking of rose scent and blood.  (that blood part, you would really like to know).

8.  District 1 & 2 trains blood-thirsty tributes!!!

District 1 and 2 train career tributes who are skilled warriors whose whole lives were dedicated to training and becoming the winning tributes.

Clueless in the Blogoshpere

(Nope, this is not about Alicia Silverstone's Clueless, but I might do a number on that later...)

I have used the internet in the recent years for the basic stuff. Facebook, e-mail, occasional research (all job or personality improvement related), a way to touch base with friends. Sometimes, I check out The Female Network's GirlTalk to catch up on what's new on make up, hair, home improvement, usual celebrity chika (I tend to hang out there a lot). Oh, when I say I check out Girl Talk a lot, it is not really that often. I do it in between my demanding job as an examiner, which means even if I do have field work, audit work would be very time consuming that I would need to work at nights and weekends and miss one annual summer ritual.

Fast forward to November 15, 2011. The Code provides that I need to be transferred if I stayed three years in the same district. I have been in the Baguio City District for years and I wouldn't have the heart to leave my family and be transferred to a far-away district. Solution: settle with office work and do review work. Okay. That would be easy. And. It. Was. Easy. Way. Too. Easy. I have days trapped in terrible ennui. I wondered which was easier. Doing nothing or doing a lot. Work, the really heavy stuff, came far and in between. I actually stared at the clock and marveled at how five minutes seemed like five hours!!! I had a chance to discover and re-discover my new passions.  Reading with my keyboard Kindle and finally discovering running. Oh, okay. That was what I only did. Run and Read. Read and Run.  Hey, it was a ritual.

Fast forward again to March. Finances were not that good compared to when I was busy. Opportunities to earn extra are not generally popping up. I turned to Girl Talk and read up on Feng Shui. I made little changes which, miraculously, helped.

Then came May. I was antsy. I wanted to write. I have always wanted to write. I became an accountant only because I thought I would have a fair chance at job applications. Besides, I always took up something that is the complete opposite of who and what I am.  Obviously, I hate Math. I so detest Math. You can actually ask my Trig teacher (she now owns the school my two girls went and where my son is going). I signed up with O-desk, Elance, iWriter, Quality Gal and, but I still did not write. I wanted to do something easy. Something that would not tax my just-recovered grey matter (working as an examiner was torture, I swear).

I signed up with Scribie. It offers transcription service that would pay you one dollar for a six-minute transcription. It was easy. As long as you pass up transcriptions with speakers having unusually heavy accents and transcriptions recorded like they were being chased by dogs.  I recently got promoted as Reviewer. If I ever mention this in international forums, posters will tell me the one dollar fee is way too low, but hey, it was easy. Later, I discovered Just Been Paid (a little of that later), myLot and Triond.

Obviously, the world wide web which was conceptualized  by scientists at CERN (will research on that. It was mentioned in detail in a Dan Brown book. I would like to think that if ever one opens Dan Brown's head, trivia will go pouring out)has become so big and its power, limitless, and filled with boundless opportunities.  I would like to find myself one day totally in sync with it.

Hello and Welcome!!!I

I grew up in the cool 80's. MTV played "Video killed the Radio Star" and totally revolutionized the way I listened (err, watched) to music.  Cyndi Lauper and Madonna were big stars (back then, plump was cute, too), and heck, I dressed like them.  I wanted to look like them.  I wanted to be a totally, for sure Valley Girl! I wanted big pink hair, bleached with peroxide, which my mom and my ultra-conservative school would of course not allow, explosive clothing, and I wanted "excessories"!!! Compact discs are still to be discovered.  Cable TV had only 20 channels.  And blogging was completely unheard of.

I used to have this little diary which my mom got me for Christmas.  I wrote to it every night, treating it like a real friend.  It had this little key, so that nobody would ever dare read my thoughts. I would never have thought that in the near future, diaries are not supposed to be kept.  They are supposed to be shared, and read by just anybody, yup, even a person you don't know.  Blogging became a word in the dictionary and Blog literally killed my secret little diary.

I am the Lumpy Cloud Princess.  I dream, I rule, I wish, I love. I'm tough.  I'm soft.  I'm loud.  I'm hard.  I'm quiet.  I am white and I am grey.  Follow me!!!
