End Chore Wars With Chorma For Chores Version 2.0.3

The weather has been great the past few days, except that it gets really chilly in the late afternoons and early evenings.  As I breathe in the fresh air, I am reminded that just a month ago, I had a viral upper respiratory tract infection which started with me losing my voice, which led to coughing which led to more coughing which persisted for almost three weeks.

My girls and my boy were so happy (they were ecstatic – just kidding) and had a blast joking about me losing my voice since I can’t order them around.

Unfortunately – for them – and luckily – for me, I got the Chorma for Chores app.

What is Chorma for Chores?

For ages which probably started with the sibling war between Cain and Abel, there is this never-ending war among siblings over who does what.  Like I said in this post, my kids think of the most creative excuses to get off housework.  And when the creative excuses are not working,  one of them is always complaining that she is doing all the housework and her younger brother just hangs out doing nothing, playing his Xbox.

Chorma for Chores solved this.

Chorma for Chores is an iOS app developed by Stephen Bennett and is available for download  from the App Store.

Chorma is a fun way for frazzled mommies like me to organize and assign chores.

Here’s how it works:
1.    Parents assign chores to family members,
2.    Chores get done .
3.    And kids get to earn points that can be redeemed for rewards.

The basic Chorma App is free.  You can also opt for Chorma Pro which has customized rewards and admin capabilities like:
1.     Create custom individual rewards.
2.     Set housemember permissions.
3.     Adjust point scores, undo chores, and more.

Personally, for me, after suffering that lost/hoarse voice for three weeks, this app is heaven-sent.  It wiped out all the complaints, each kid became responsible for trying to finish his/her task to earn points, and not one of them talked about me being -  “Unfair.  How come (put sibling name here) gets to do nothing?”

This app requires that all members of the household should have an iOS device.  Each of them has to download the app.

After setting Chorma up, I don’t have to make a big Chore Board or send text messages just to remind them of their list of chores to-do.  Chorma reminds them!

Chorma’s dashboard has four main sections:
1.     My Chores
2.     All Chores
3.     Recent Acitivity
4.     Housemembers

Just tap the “+” button on the right side of the screen to create a new chore.  You then give the Chore Title, assign Chorma Points between 1-5 according to how difficult or how long the task is (reminiscent of those little stars I put beside their chore chart), assign the chore to a housemember then mark it as a repeating task or having a specific schedule.

You can also assign tasks as “Claimable”.  A housemember may want to earn extra Chorma points and claim the task valiantly.

I love how the app has an easy dashboard/interface, making it easy even for my eight-year old boy to use.  My only bone with this app is that it requires each housemember to have his own iOS device, making it practically impossible for younger housemembers to be included.  I wish the app would be upgraded in a way that you don't need to invite a housemember and a housemember do not have the option to accept or decline (Mom is the Law!).

My intentions are pure, though.  I just want younger members to be included (parents can guide them using the parents’ iOS devices.).

Over-all, though, for moms like me whose children constantly bicker
on who gets to do what, Chorma for Chores is a weapon of peace!

It is SOOO Pasko Na!

Counting the hours to weekend!

Anyways, I was supposed to  do my piece on Manny Pacquiao's tax woes and how maybe, just maybe, somebody in his team (his finance team) messed.BIG.TIME. (and I hope he will make heads roll instead of going to the press), but that would be for later, because as I write this, it is drizzling in my side of the world.

It is so cold I just want to lie down and do nothing.

For a week, we have been having alternate foggy and sunny weather.  Look at how weird our city weather is:

Sunny and foggy - at the same time

But the best thing is that  Pasko is so around the corner na!

I haven't decorated yet...this weekend I will.

But parts of the city is decked with the Christmas spirit na...

Like my fave hangout-the Camp John Hay Technohub!

I will be checking out the Baguio Country Club Village next - I will be going there on a slow day - probably on a weeknight - because a big crowd totally removes all my childhood excitement and enchantment.  Plus, I want to go crazy on the fake snow alone hehe.

Okay, back to my warm bed!

Don't Just Count Your Blessings, Share Your Blessings

Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda Survivor

With everything that our country has been going through lately, I forgot that we barely have a month before Christmas!  I was making a memo at the office this morning and I actually put the date as October!

So, anyway, no way will I ever ever postpone or forget Christmas.

{Money Mondays}Being Your Own Boss: From Mere Employee to Thriving Business Owner

According to Robert Kiyosaki, the author of the best-selling bookRich Dad, Poor Dad, obtaining financial freedom is matter of generating passive income. In other words, one must either be a business owner or an investorif possible, both. In his conceptual tool called The CASHFLOW Quadrant, he states that there are four major ways to generate income: as an employee (E), a self-employed individual or small business owner (S), a business owner (B) and an investor (I). Kiyosaki says that those on the left side of the divide (E and S) may never obtain true wealth. Why? Being an employee or a self-employed person means being actively present to generate income. No work? No pay. When the company you're working for lays you off, where will you go?

Monday Mournings

from www.quotepictures.net

Hey, everyone!  I know tomorrow is supposed to be the first working day of the week and that I should be cheery and grateful for a brand new day, but I am not up to it.

Weekend Cook

A photo by debspoons via freedigitalphotos.net
One running joke in the family (years ago, mind you) was that I didn’t know how to cook.  Each time I volunteered to cook, everyone would say they would rather eat out.  I never was a domestic diva.

Goods.ph works hand-in-hand with the Philippine National Red Cross To Help Victics of Typhoon Yolanda / Haiyan

Written By Gilbert Dadia

Misery and desperation are deeply etched on the faces of the millions of victims of super Typhoon Yolanda, not knowing where to get their next meal or how to rebuild their broken homes and lives and how to cope with the loss of their loved ones. Chaos is widespread as the citizenry have nowhere to go for basic services: there is no electricity, no water services, no communications and worse no local government service to speak of. The typhoon victims have to literally fend for themselves.

Wrath of Haiyan/Typhoon Yolanda #‎lookingforlittletarin‬

From a distance, looking at the damage, the death and destruction that Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan brought to our countrymen seem so surreal.  My heart goes out to them… my heart breaks when I hear help has not reached them… my heart screams when I hear politicians blaming each other and my heart melts when I think of the trauma every little kid would have undergone.

And I cry when I read something like this…

I don’t know GeraldineSustento, but my co-worker/friend does.  She belonged to Batch ’98 of Saint Louis Girls’ High School, Baguio City (where I am an alumna), a Baguio-bred girl who settled in Tacloban City.

From my friend’s Facebook page:

THIS IS HEARTBREAKING…PLEASE TAKE TIME TO READ.

This is Geraldine “Geo” Sustento together with her husband, Agit Sustento and 3 year old son Tarin Sustento. Geraldine or Geo as everyone calls her was born and raised in Mines View Barangay, Baguio City.

Early this year, they settled in Tacloban City,  her husband’s hometown.

“This was what happened to Geo (as recounted by Joanna and DukeDuke Sustento - Agit's siblings):

Last November 8, 2013 @ around 5am in the morning, Geo together with the rest of the family members, were already awake and even had breakfast together. At 7 AM, as the storm continued to get stronger, water started to enter the house. They thought it was only rain water so they blocked the windows and doors with rags but the water started rising in just a few minutes. They decided to go out of their house even if the storm was still at its strongest. In the process, they broke the closest windows and held on to the metal bars for safety as the water continued to rise. Agit and his brother saw a life vest floating so they put it on Tarin. There was even an ice box floating nearby, so Agit said to Duke Duke to get it so he can put Tarin inside. Unfortunately, DukeDuke can't confirm if Agit was able to catch the box and what happened to them at that point because he got separated from them due to the strong current.

Joanna and the rest was still at their house and according to her, as the water got higher and inside the house, there was even a snake swimming with them. The snake bit Geo's hand. Joanna said she sucked the venom or blood from the bite. We are not sure if the snake was poisonous or not but anyway, Geo started to get nervous. The situation is worse than we thought. Joanna said that it was like your body and face are being hit with hard, cold ice. The water was so cold so everybody was already shaking. Tarin kept quiet the whole time, didn't even cry, but you can see the worry in his eyes too. His parents kept him close to them.

The flood happened in a matter of minutes. It rose up to 15 feet high.

At this point, nobody knows the exact details how Geo, Agit, Tito Cesar and Tita Thelma were taken.”

Geo’s sister Genevieve together with husband Karl and cousin Bibeth were in Tacloban City to check on the remains of Geo, Agit and Geo’s parents in laws. The bodies of Geo, Agit and Thelma Sustento have then been buried at Palo, Leyte

Our main concern now is Geo’s 3 year-old Son Tarin Sustento, who was swept away from his parent’s arms during the typhoon. According to a family member, before Tarin was swept away, his father Agit found a life jacket and placed it on him to save him and nobody can tell yet if his father was able to place Tarin on the floating ice box. The family and friends are hoping for miracle that Tarin could make it, that he was just somewhere else’s hand safe and sound. (Taken from Francine Kelly’s Status)

PLEASE HELP US FIND HIM no matter what the circumstance is, as long as her aunt Genevieve will have Tarin in her arms. "

PLEASE DON’T LET THIS POST END  HERE. HELP US SPREAD THE NEWS. SHARE ON TWITTER, FACEBOOK, YOUR BLOG...

ANY INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT Genevieve Bindo: 0905-663-3401 OR Bibeth Lacaden: 0917-590-9837

Things To Donate To Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda Victims

THIS IS A REPOST: To everyone who is actively participating in packing relief goods to be sent to Tacloban City/Leyte and other affected areas, please take note note of the following:

1.) DO NOT PACK NOODLES OR ANYTHING THAT NEEDS WATER. There is no water and electricity so it is impossible to consume this kind of food.Send crackers, pouches of foil packed pre- prepared,easy-to-open canned goods & ready-to-eat foods like crackers will  do.

2.) PACK MEDICINES - most especially basic medicines (Biogesic, Bioflu, Robitussin etc). Also if possible, include medicine for surface wounds (Betadine, alcohol, gauze bandages, band aids) as many have been wounded because of the debris and fallen rooftops.

3.) PACK AT LEAST ONE BOTTLE OF WATER. People are raging for water (some have even become violent just for water). There is no source of water at all at any part of Tacloban.

4.) PACK CANDLES AND MATCHES - there's no electricity for a minimum of two months so all people will need these.

5.) PACK CLOTHES in a CLEAR PLASTIC and LABEL according to size eg. male adult large. so families will get appropriate clothing. Please pack clean, pre-washed clothes only, brand new underwear if possible.

6.) FLIP FLOPS or tsinelas are the most needed foot wear. avoid sending closed, leather shoes.

7.) TOWELS all sizes are also needed and useful , plus soap and shampoo a big help to stop the spread of germs and improve hygiene. Sanitary napkins and disposable diapers too are needed.

Adrian's school (we are in Baguio City), Bridges Tutorial and Learning Center located at no. 3 Laurel Street, Baguio City, is collecting contributions which will be picked up by the Sacred Heart Community volunteers tomorrow (November 13, 2013) Wednesday evening.

Baguio residents can also give their contributions/donations to the Bishop's Place at the Baguio Cathedral and the local chapter of the Philippine National Red Cross.

For cash donations:

{Money Mondays} Easy Ways To Save

A photo by marin via freedigitalphotos.net

Don’t make a sakto salary  a reason for having no savings.  Even when you only have enough money to cover your bills, you can still find spending loopholes that can score you extra money.  In fact there are always ways to cut corners.  That Starbucks coffee (which I will definitely be getting this whole month to get my planner which I will try to avoid starting today) you drink every morning  - and maybe the other one you will have after work, with muffin, by the way – are costing you more than you can imagine.  Foregoing your two Starbucks Toffee Nut Latte a day will give you about an extra of P3,000.00 in ten days.

Tweaking your lifestyle even a bit can give you extra cash to set aside for saving.  Foregoing that P40.00 per day you make taya at the lotto outlet  will net you P1,200.00 in 30 days.  You can also brown bag your lunch and limit your dining out on special occasions.

When payday comes around, “pay” yourself first before your expenses and you will eventually experience the best kind of freedom – financial independence.

This year, I joined the TrulyRichClub.  It was one of the best decisions of my life.  Founded by Bo Sanchez, its purpose is to “help good people become rich”.  Because of the guidance I get from the Club, I am now investing in the Stock Market each month! Shocking, right?  But it’s amazing how I am personally growing my finances.  I’m inviting you to join the Club, too.  If you’re interested, click the link below and listen to Bo explain what it is all about.  Do email me if you have any questions!

LSS: What Does The Fox Say?

Every mom who has seven to eight year old boys know about how weird their sense of humor can get.  (and how literally dirty it can get - like my boy would swear Speculoos Cookie Butter looks like poop!)

And it also shows in his choice of songs - "What Does The Fox Say" is his favorite song.  I thought it was just some nasty song and I had to warn him to stop singing it until I found out it is actually a song (and not an excuse to use a cuss word)  with a viral video which got 20,000,000 plus hits in YouTube.  Problem is,  it is unfortunately stuck in my head (no matter how I hate the ding-ding sound, I find myself actually singing it.  Ugh!

Including Ellen's!

Rainy Days, Rainy Emotions

A photo by David Castillo Dominici via freedigitalphotos.net

When it rains, do you feel like it will never stop?  And when the sun does come out, do you have that feeling that it will turn cloudy any moment?  I have these days.  I get rainy emotions!  When it is cloudy or rainy, I feel so gloomy and sad and feel like I will be gloomy and sad forever, stuck in the house with nothing to do!

However, I do recognize that it is nature's way of telling us to slow down, take things slow and re-charge.  When you are stuck in your home on a rainy day, listening to awesome music with your exceptional audio technica m50 headphones will definitely lift up your gloomy mood.  And oh, grab that book that is on your bedside table for years!  You will realize rainy days, beautiful music and a wonderful book make for a glorious day!
