Three Hidden Costs of Financial Ignorance

Happy Money Monday!  For this Money Monday edition, I am again featuring J3 Patino of Game of Wealth with his thought-provoking post on how ignorance can cost you BIG TIME!
.
If you think education is expensive… try ignorance.”

The most expensive money mistakes are the ones you have no idea you’re making. When it comes to financial education, it is easier to prefer “free” ignorance over having to pay for education. The consequence of this is a short-term gain (savings) with a long-term pain (bad financial decisions).

In this article, my goal is to simply share with you the 3 biggest and most expensive costs of ignorance. It’s listed down in order of increasing gravity. As you further go down the list, the costs are going to get more and more painful. And honestly, I started writing this article not knowing how “costly” ignorance is… but now that I’m done with it, it’s actually pretty scary. With that said, let’s get started!

How I Survived Finals Week! (With A Little Help From Pure ‘N Fresh Cologne)

(Note:  Today, I turn over this blog to my daughter, V, as she talks about how she survived her final exams.)

Have you ever gone through those last four weeks of the semester promising yourself that you will ace your exam by hitting the books every single night (no Facebook! No Instagram!, Seryoso! And no cramming involved, too !)?

Did your strategy or plan work??

... Well, in my case, it was difficult!  (And having the constant urge to check out my Facebook and Instagram did not help.At.All.)

(Mom:There’s a name for that. FOMO. The Fear of Missing Out. And good thing you don’t really like teleseryes, too, or you will end up studying the whole night.)

I even prayed for the exams to be cancelled!

Finals week is the one dreaded week in every student’s life.  This is when you dedicate yourself to studying to get a good grade in every subject.  I would know how it feels!  I have been through it one too many times.

And the worst finals week I had was this March.  Throughout the finals week, I did my best to stay up all night and study.  It was somewhat the worst moments I’ve been through.

The things they say about not sleeping before or after reviewing is true- it did lessen my thinking capabilities and I almost didn't remember anything.

I even remember crying to my mom and saying sorry because I had the feeling that I might fail the dreaded Physics subject. ( Although, thank The Lord, I passed! And I was given an unexpected high grade!)

Finals week is REALLY toxic. (Emphasis on really.)  But here are sure-fire tips from moi on how to survive your finals week:

1. SLEEP WELL

You had classes for months.  Don’t ever attempt to cram all those information in one night, because the bad news is – it won’t work.  I have done my share of not sleeping before the exams, and it made  my mind go gaga – literally.  I felt like I had a huge hangover (I’m kidding.  I don’t really know what hangover feels like!).  The best thing to do is to be well-prepared by studying waay before finals week.

2. USE MNEMONICS

My mom is a big fan of mnemonics (The first ones she taught me was ROYGBIV for the colors of the rainbow and My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas for the planets – this was before Pluto was downgraded to a dwarf planet).

At first, this didn’t work out for me. I just highlighted the crap out of my book in my high school days and it somehow worked.  When I entered college though, this was my weapon of choice in remembering medical terms like Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can't Handle for remembering the carpal bones. I know it sounds nasty, but it makes me remember S for scaphoid. L for lunate. T for triquetrium. T for trapezoid. C for capitate. And lastly H for hamate.

3. ASK QUESTIONS AND  HAVE GROUP REVIEWS.

Given the fact that I am usually a socially awkward person, I tend to shy away from group reviews. But recently, I found the guts to actually ask help from my block mates  (and even my instructors) when I review. I even tutored them sometimes. It would be better to share your knowledge than to keep it to yourself, right?

4. LIMIT DRINKING OF COFFEE.

Coffee used to be my number one drink of choice.  Whenever cramming is involved, I drink 2 to 3 iced coffees a night! But they aren't effective anyway. Caffeine dulls my mind and makes me so jumpy.  So I suggest, my fellow students, that you cut off drinking coffee, and well, stick to the pure, basic and plain ol' water. It keeps me awake better than coffee.

5. MUSIC

Music  has helped me review throughout my finals week. Not only does it make you concentrate (when music is slow and not that distracting of course,) but it also drowns out the noisy convos and loud voices of blockmates or friends who have no plan of reviewing. Plus, it gives you that extra push to review. Like, when an upbeat song is up, you just feel the music and say, I have to review! I can do this!

AND FINALLY,

6. ALWAYS LOOK FRESH.

I know.  You may have stayed up the whole night. But please, don’t ever look like it!  I may have eyebags as big as my backpack…

purenfresh

But I still manage to look and smell fresh with Pure ‘N Fresh colognes!

purenfresh

Studies show that scents can greatly affect your mood, and Pure ‘N Fresh’s Tropical Splash and Tangerine Delight never fail to make me feel fresh, confident and ready to take the world (err, ready to ace my exam!).

Truly, Pure ‘N Fresh is my first step to freshness!

And since my mom told me that Unilab, the company behind  Pure ‘N Fresh Colognes and FeminineWash, has been around since my grandparents’ time developing wonderful products and medicines, I can be sure that I am using quality products at a good price (I don't have to ask mom for extra cash to buy it.  It is soo sulit, believe me!).

And I don’t need to worry about breaking out into rashes or something.  I have the world’s most sensitive skin and Pure ‘N Fresh Colognes which were tested by dermatologists and hypo-allergenic never irritated my mild and sensitive skin.

Pure ‘N Fresh Tropical Splash smells so sweet, with a scent that reminds me of peaches and apples.  My personal favorite is Pure ‘N Fresh Tangerine Delight.  It smells citrusy, which makes me feel energetic, alert and fresh all day long (I think it makes me remember everything I studied!).  I spritz it every time.  It just smells soo good!

Like Pure ‘N Fresh onFacebook and get tips to Fabulosity via their app!

And by the way, I have been dreaming about this for days na...

pure n fresh
Sorry about the eyebags!

Have a pure 'n fresh day!

Give Your Memory A Boost: WeChat History Backup

Like any other mom, I am a multi-tasker.

A very bad multi-tasker.

Why?  Because I have a particular aversion to listing everything down using a pencil and a notebook.  Committing everything to memory actually worked when I was a little younger, but getting older (inamin din!), in addition to doing so many things all at once, really made me forget things I should buy on my grocery list (and yes, I am one of those moms who intend to buy a laundry detergent and end up buying loads of groceries except the detergent) and special dates like a PTC conference and our wedding anniversary (I kid not! I remembered it only on the date itself when hubby greeted me.  I realized I was looking at a wrong month in the calendar!).

How to Host Your Little Girl’s Slumber Party

When I was younger (and smaller), I loved going to slumber parties.  I loved the pillow fights, late night orders of pizza, movie marathons, braiding each other’s hair, trying on make-up…It was a blast!

Happy Birthday, Mama!

"Happy Birthday, I love you"

Today, it is the eighth year that you will be celebrating your birthday up there in heaven.  How many days have I wished that I could say to you, "I love you..."

Three words.  Yet everyday, I say them in different ways.  Whenever Paula, Nicole or Adrian need advice or reassurance, I try to do or say what you always would, had you been here.  I may never do it perfectly like you did, but I try hard.  I strive to be like you.  Every day is a celebration of missing you and honoring your memory, which starts with those three words.

I have always thought you were Wonder Woman.  Everything worked perfectly when you were around.  Nothing ever went wrong.  It may have been your grace, your unwavering faith, your sincerity.  Your quiet reassurance that everything will be okay when I was having problems always worked.  Just being beside you made me believe that I can be anyone I wanted to be.

And I remember the laughter, the mischief in your eyes.  The way your hand felt so soft and fragile in mine, despite your struggle to keep your memories alive even when your meningioma was getting worse.

I remember...

How you loved receiving flowers.

How you literally dragged me to watch every Sharon and Gabby movie (I was on a stage where I hated everything my mom loved!).

How I cried every time I hear  "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Miss You Like Crazy when I left home for six months to have my CPA Review in Manila.  I still cry like buckets when I hear these songs!

How you kept every single card I gave you.  Later, you also kept Paula and Nicole's notes to you.

How you prohibited me from going to a friend's debut and I swore I will remember what you did for the rest of my life (I still do, but without the seriousness of a teenager).

How you helped me make my school projects.  You seemed to know everything.  Every kind of stitch, you can sew.  And you can knit and crochet, too, and before scrapbooks were the thing, you already had yours!

How gifted you were and yet so humble, so complicated and yet so simple.  A perfect mother.

How, when your condition was getting worse, you would squeeze my hand and whisper weakly, "I love you."

Three words I so long to say to you personally. Every single day. My guardian angel, please tell my mom, "I love her."

"Forever."

I guarantee that.

If you desire to make a mark, follow your passion and define what you would want to be when you grow up, why don't you attend a Summer Workshop?

Applying for a Personal Loan in the Philippines

Source

Do you want to put up a small business but don’t have the right cash to get you started? Are you planning to buy a new car or a house you can call your own? Or is your daughter is in need of paying his college tuition but you’re out of budget?

Personal loans can be a good option or even your life saver especially when an emergency comes up.

If you came to be in any sort of financial need, a personal loan can give you the right amount of resources to get you through. That includes business needs, car financing, housing loan, education, vacation expenses, medical expenses, wedding expenses and the list goes on.

Although a personal loan may seem to be easy and simple to opt and get, you need to keep in mind the following guidelines to make it certainly beneficial on your end:

Know the basics, do your research and gather as much information you can get

There are five basic things you need to understand before availing a personal loan:

Interest rate. This is the cost of borrowing money from the lender which is expressed as a percentage of the loan amount. It is basically the measure of how much return lenders will get from you.

Processing charges. Aside from interest rates, lenders often add up some charges for processing your loan. This is how they get to pay their agents and all the costs obtained from making the loan possible.

Prepayment charges. This is the amount you pay to your lender as a form of early repayment of your loan to take advantage of lowering the interest rate. The higher your prepayment, the lower the interest rate.

Penalty charges. You need to be crucial about paying your monthly dues on time. If and when you are unable to pay on time, lenders often penalized you with additional charges.

Collateral. Though sometimes not required, collateral is something that you pledge to your lender to secure repayment of the loan. It could be in the form of any considerable property like your car, your house, land property, and the like.

Compare loan packages

It’s better that you have a list of choices to help you make an informed decision and to help you get the best deal. Discuss with the lenders the interest rates that they offer, ask about the prepayment charges and penalties.

Moreover, keep in mind to not settle with only a few options. There are a lot of loan providers such as banks, lending companies or even private individuals. Comparison sites can also help you compare loan packages from several banks or lenders. It can help you save a lot of time and effort, and ultimately make the process a lot easier for you and provide you with the best loan product fit for your needs.

Choose reputable lenders

To give you a better idea, below are some of the most reputable banks in the Philippines offering personal loans:

Banco de Oro (BDO)

Easy payment terms, low interest rates, fast processing time, reward points, are the basic personal loan features that this company has to offer. BDO has topped total capital accounts in the recent years and has gained the highest market share in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI)

BPI offers a collateral free personal loan and has flexible terms to help you pay your loan at your desired term. It has a widespread branches across the country with online services that will make it easier for you to pay.

Land Bank of the Philippines

If you are working as regular or permanent Government employee, Landbank allows you to avail a salary loan program. Land Bank is a government financial institution with its profits used for developmental programs and initiatives.

Consider your current financial situation

It is often recommended that you make sure you get a loan that doesn’t go over 30% of your income. Before signing up for a loan, ask yourself this simple question: “Would I be able to pay the entire loan without missing a single payment?” If the answer is no, penalty charges and interests may accumulate and will make it much harder for you to pay the entire loan. Bottom line is, borrow what you can pay.

This article is exclusively written for Mommy Unwired by MoneyMax.ph, the Philippines’ leading financial comparison portal which helps Filipino consumers make the right financial decisions as they compare the best credit card, home loan, broadband plan, and more—fast, comprehensive, and free.

Things To Consider When Buying Newborn Clothes

So Baby No. 1 is due in a month or two.  You read through the pregnancy booklet and see a long list of what you are going to need for the arrival of your little bundle of joy.
And aren’t you excited to get all those cute newborn baby clothes?
I was, especially when I learned Baby Number 1 was going to be a girl!  You know how I am with anything pink!  (Proof is this blog and another proof is how I love Pink’s music.) I bought a bunch of tiny, pink newborn clothes that would probably give my daughter a fresh change for over a year (not quite, of course, I am exaggerating, but you get the drift. I bought a bunch of clothes which will only fit a newborn).
Shopping for a newborn’s babyclothes is fun, there’s no question about it.  Who can resist those tiny clothes in pastel blue , purple, pink and yellow?  But hold on, before you go gung-ho and purchase every piece of baby clothing you think is eye candy, consider first how useful and practical it is.
When buying newborn baby clothes, consider the following:
1.    Have you tried putting clothes on a newborn?  I swear newborns seem all heads!  I remember trying to fit a cute shirt over my newborn’s head and failing.
Always consider buying short and long-sleeved cotton cardigans with a snap front closure,  onesies/body suits with big or stretchy neck opening and comfortable leg openings, and sleepers in comfortable cloth. And oh, they don’t need to be in generic white or printed with cute dinosaur patterns.  You can dress up your little one in your favorite team’s  color like the onesies from http://www.babyfans.com/baby-packers.aspx.
2.    If you have a baby girl, please forego any lace sewn on any part of the clothing. It can be quite irritating to the skin.  Also consider where the snaps and buttons are.  Snaps and buttons at the back will be uncomfortable for the baby.  Make sure the buttons and snaps are not coming off.  Check them every time you wash the clothes.  The buttons can easily end up inside your little one’s hand which she can accidentally put inside her mouth.
3.    Be sure the onesies and romper suits you buy have snap crotches to make it easier for you to change diapers.
4.    Babies do grow fast!  Don’t buy a lot of clothes of the same size like I did.  You might just end up with clothes that were never worn because your baby has outgrown them.
5.    Do not buy expensive designer baby clothes.  They will be worn for just a few months.
6.    Do not buy shoes for newborn.  I have a confession.  I was so in love with the Air Jordans I got a pair for my little boy (besides, I was so excited to have a boy after my two girls), thereby violating #5 and a fact of life – babies cannot walk. (Plus, you cannot imagine how difficult it was to put those shoes on baby’s feet and fear that it will fall and get lost in the mall!)

Three Awesome Ways To Finally Get Fit

Finally Fit
freedigitalphotos
“Every year I promise myself I’ll finally get fit – and each year I blow it.  How can I stick with it for good?”

Everyone goes through cycles of having great intentions and getting derailed.  Staying on track is a mental adjustment that comes down to three basic steps.

(By the way, incentives to losing weight can help.  Try to check out this site for something you can really look forward to if you lose some weight.)

First, believe that you will succeed , or you’ll make it easier to quit (“I didn’t think I’d be able to do it, and  was right”).

Next, change how you see adversity.  Instead of obsessing about that  piece of cake you just saw at the cake shop  or the days you missed your workout, jump back into your fitness and healthy-eating routine as soon as possible.

While you’re at it, lose downer words like “relapse” and “mistake.”  Stay positive (falling off the wagon is a learning experience!).

Finally, replace the “buts” – “I’ve dropped 15 pounds but I have so far to go” – with “ands” – “I’ve dropped 15 pounds and I’m on my way of achieving my goal.”

{Book Review} Hugo The Happy Starfish Simply Charming

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Adrian just officially decreed that today is Appreciation Day.

hugo happy starfish book review

In our household, compliments and appreciation are free-flowing.

Suze Liebermann’s "Hugo The Happy Starfish" is a series of colorfully-illustrated books written especially for little children.  Each series aims to make children understand their feelings, develop good attitudes, make the right and moral choices and be ready to face the consequences of the choices they make.

Hugo The Happy Starfish Simply Charming takes Hugo and his friends to the Island of Appreciation wherein they learn how to appreciate others, no matter how different or strange they look.  As they learned to appreciate, compliments came freely and they started to see the good things first in others.
And once they started to appreciate and see what is good in the creatures they meet, Hugo and his friends realized that it is not that hard to compliment others.

And the reward they got was unimaginable happiness.  The joy and happiness they gave to the creatures they complimented transcended to their own attitudes and will definitely make them happier and better Starfish and Sea Creatures as they grow.

This book will make little children to look beyond someone’s physical looks and that there is something in each and every one of us that is special and beautiful.

Fangirl Evolution

Teens can be such fangirls.  Nicole used to love One Direction.  She’s got Limited edition CDs, exclusive collector’s items and autographed T-shirts – she collects them all!  Now, she’s considering selling all her 1D Band Merch to buy guitar strings online.  She now loves more “serious” bands who sing songs with more meaningful lyrics.  It just seems weird though.  Nicole has the sweetest voice in the house – she used to sing Disney songs to guests and played a major part in a play in school, but when I hear her sing a rock song, I swear I do a double-take.  Teens…

{Dear Young Lady} Pure 'N Fresh on Prom Night

Dear Young Lady,

My own prom was far from perfect – there was stiff pineapple hair involved, but hey, every one of us had that horror hair (It defined my generation!).  Prom, like any other event, will not be without glitches.  But it will also one of the most awesome nights of your life, I promise you.

Should I go Prom Night
Arrgggh!! PROM NIGHT!!!SHOULD I GO???

Let me tell you why you should go:

High School only happens once.

When you’re all grown up, practically all the best memories of your wonder years will be the time when you were in high school.  It is a night you will be talking about at your high school batch’s tenth year reunion so don’t even dare miss it!

You don’t even need to have a date in order to have fun.

Not having a date won’t ruin your night! (Besides, your dad would prefer it that way).  Just put on your lovely dress and rock the night with your friends.

Seize the night! No regrets!

I know some of your friends will skip the prom because they think it is overrated and so “cheesy” (their words).  Don’t take their word for it.  I believe every prom night gets sprinkled with pixie dust where every little thing gets better, hit after hit (like Casey Kasem’s Top 40 – but of course, you don’t know him ;)).

And since you won’t probably trust my glam style after I confessed about having that “stiff horror movie hair” on my prom night, here are tips from Julia Barretto  on how to glam up and rock your prom!

And oh, let me tell you about Unilab’s  Pure ‘n Fresh.

Pure 'N Fresh For Teens!

I know we had a talk about how important good personal hygiene is especially now that physical changes are happening to your body.  Since you inherited my genes and have incredibly sensitive skin (your skin broke out just thinking about your prom just like my skin broke out when I realized you are old enough to go to the prom!), I emphasized to you the importance of using a mild feminine wash to keep you feeling fresh without being harsh to your sensitive feminine area.  Although you love Pure ‘N Fresh Feminine Wash mainly because it is “fabulously fruity” and “smells sooo good!”, let me emphasize that this wash, especially made for teens like you, contains milk protein which means it will help make your skin healthier. plus it is enriched with chamomile extract which is perfect for your super-sensitive skin.  With its right pH of 5, you can use it daily!

Pure 'N Fresh For Teens

And to go on feeling pure and fresh everyday and on glam nights like your prom night, spritz on Pure ‘n Fresh cologne. You know how you love anything that smells sweet?  You will love Pure ‘N Fresh’s Tangerine Delight, Blush Berry and Tropical Splash.  And since Pure 'N Fresh Feminine Wash and Colognes are made by Unilab, you can be assured of the research and quality control that these products have undergone. They have been around developing wonderful products and medicines since your grandparents' time!  Go tell your friends and like Pure ‘N Fresh on Facebook for more Fabulousity tips!

And you know what, Young Lady?  Millions of girls all over the world are probably stressing over Prom Night.  It is not just you.  But let me tell you this.  On that  10th year high school batch reunion in the future,  you will look back to your prom night and swear it is one of the most special, most memorable nights of your life.  Everything will just fall into place.  Just have fun!!! (and don’t get heavy handed on the hairspray like my generation did!)

                                                                                                Love,
                                                                             Mom

39 Day Lifescape - Become A Better You

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

"What is a Lifescape?
Lifescape (n.) 1. The landscape of your life’s evolution.
                         2. Escape into the life you really want.
                         3. Your Life’s Narrative."
                                                      -Jaha Knight
I have always wanted to define my life’s purpose, but with so many books on self-improvement, I didn’t know where to start.

Jaha Knight’s 39 Day Lifescape - Become a Better You  is the perfect fit for me.  For 39 Days, you commit to a series of challenges that will lead to a Better You.

Day One: Commitment really hit home for me.

For every goal to be achieved, commitment is needed.  You have to put your heart, dedicate every piece of your strength – no matter how hard or difficult, to achieve your goal.  This is what Jaha emphasized on Day One of the 39 Day Lifescape.  She promises that “During the 39 days, we are going to take the beautifully  wild pieces of your life and shape them into the manicured works of art that you want your life to become.  That will be your lifescape. “She says it will be hard, but you need to commit in order to see a change.

Through the entire 39 days, Jaha  will take you to a journey of self-improvement.  You will LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF from Days 1-6 through your attitude and changes in it, believing in success, becoming self-conscious, being hopeful in everything,  and working harder on yourself until you get to Day 39 and claim your new lifescape.

Every one of us wants a change to happen to us.  It may be a physical change – like a desire to lose weight or emotional – like learning to appreciate ourselves more.  Whatever change we may want, Jaha’s book will serve as a guide as she takes you each day – step by step – as you slowly discover, recognize, believe and shape your lifescape.

Each day you commit has a corresponding workbook which will further reinforce what you learned for the day. So, for this book, you just don’t read it, you do it.  It pushes you to make changes to escape into a life that you really want and deserve.

This book is pretty straight-forward.  It doesn’t sugar-coat things, but pushes you and motivates you into doing, committing and re-branding yourself.

But the rewards for committing to 39 days are boundless.  Because you would have truly defined who you are, what you want. After 39 days, you will have developed your lifescape.

Discover the New You!
