As an employer, you are responsible for ensuring your employees’ well-being and preventing burnout. While employees may feel the need to work long hours to meet expectations, you are responsible for setting the example and promoting a healthy work-life balance.
Follow this guide to be the best boss and help employees achieve a healthy work-life balance.

Try shift management
Helping your employees avoid fatigue can be as simple as using shift management.
There are certain types of shifts managers you should know about. When you are aware of job shifts, it can help you run a business that is fair and kind to your employees. While some employees might be fine to work long days, it can become tiresome. Dividing the days into shifts so that various people cover the opening hours can make things easier.
You can use first, second, and third job shift structures. This involves three sets of employees working at different times to cover the opening hours. It will shorten people’s days and allow them to avoid fatigue while still keeping your business open.
Another effective strategy is the flex shift method. Here, employees work for their dedicated weekly or monthly hours. If they complete their hours and wish to work more, they can claim overtime. This method not only allows for flexibility but also incentivizes employees to manage their time effectively.
Attending to employee needs
Whether you want to take your large corporation or small business to the next stage, you must attend to employee needs. This can be best achieved by getting to know your employees personally and encouraging open communication.
When employees feel comfortable, they will open up about their concerns. When you are aware of them, it is important to provide support. While you won’t want to step on toes and get too involved, providing support will guarantee you are fair and aware of why an employee might need a break or extra care.
If an employee is going through a tough time at home, being aware of this can help you provide the support they need. It can also help you be fair and ensure that they are well cared for. You can maintain a bond with them, make sure they feel comfortable at work, and avoid burnout due to stress on both ends. If they need a break but don’t admit it, you can provide it and promote good health.
Reminders to switch off
Setting reminders for employees to switch off can support a healthy work-life balance for your team.
Employees might not be the best at time keeping. When they have lots of work to do, they can easily forget to take breaks. Hence, be the best support system and set employee reminders to switch off. You can do this by sending emails out every few hours. This will remind employees to step away from their screens and take a well-deserved break. Employees need a break to reset and focus, so it will help them when they return to work.
Offer more vacation time
More vacation time is ideal for every employee. Most employees will use vacation days for dental appointments or childcare. While this is their choice, it doesn’t help them get a proper break.
A few days added to their vacation period will help them find more time to take a proper break. Everyone needs extended breaks (more than a day or two) to reset and recover from a busy work life fully.
Only allow employees to work opening hours
Encouraging employees to only work during opening hours will allow them to have downtime when they get home. When employees have incomplete tasks, it might encourage them to work in the evenings. This isn’t ideal for their health or well-being.
When you promote working during restricted hours, it is up to employees to listen. It is their choice and completely out of your control. However, it will encourage most to abide by it and take the evenings and weekends to unwind.
Check-in with employees
It is wise to check in with employees to ensure they are maintaining a healthy work-life balance. From their responses and energy levels, you will understand if they are balancing their work and personal lives to ensure they are not heading toward burnout.
You can ask about their vacation or when they plan to take a break. Setting the best example and offering them guidance will make sure they understand you want them to take breaks and have a life outside of work.
