I just want to let you know that all opinions are my own and I may earn from qualifying purchases. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. Enjoy and feel free to share with your friends!

Republic Act No. 9994, otherwise known as the “Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010” gave senior citizens, or those resident citizens of the the Philippines 60 years old and above, benefits such as 20 percent discount on their basic purchases of basic essential goods and services such as medicines, transportation, medical and dental fees, and hotel and restaurant services.   Purchases covered by the discount are also considered exempt from the value-added tax.

This 20% discount and Vat exemption can only be availed of by a Senior Citizen if he has a Senior Citizen ID, right?

Wrong.

Senior Citizens can avail of the benefits under the Republic Act by using either the following Identification Cards:

  • Philippine Passport
  • Senior Citizens’ Identification Card
  • Driver’s License
  • SSS/GSIS ID
  • PRC (Professional Regulation Commission) Card
  • Postal ID or
  • Voter’s ID.
The following is an infographic provided by ABS-CBN News on what benefits our elderly should be enjoying under the Republic Act:

I just hope that establishment will honor this discount for the elderly, because like what Farida, there are establishments who do not honor this law.

wow, thanks for this one. when dining outside, we used to present MIL's senoir citizen card to avail of the discount. Medyo malaki din kasi ang nababawas. Pero minsan kapag nalimutan namin ung card nya we never get that discount. Now I know that Senoir Citizen card is not the only ID we can show to the cashier. Pwede pala ung iba. Thanks for this info.
