Kids just hate
writing.
English teachers
polishing their students’ essay writing swear
that their kids just do not have the heart to write!
But I guess they do.  They just don’t like doing it for an English
subject requirement.
They write every time and
oh, so creatively, too.  Just look at their
Facebook status, comments, notes and tweets, text messages, and e-mails.  They love blogging their thoughts on Tumblr, posting
photos on Instagram with very witty captions, and writing something smart (!)like
“Marie was here!” on bathroom walls.  I
don’t know if they still pass secret notes in class, but we did that a lot in
my time.
Kids do love to
write.  They just don’t like doing it for
a class.
Believe me, kids do not
need to rely on an essay writing service
if they are asked to write about something they are familiar with, something or
someone they care passionately about.
Essay topics are forced on the students, but it will be better if they
are allowed to choose a topic to write about that is close to their hearts,
something that they have a strong opinion on (like cyber bullying and how to
prevent it), something that makes them angry (like the 182 pine trees to be cut
at the SM- Baguio Mall to give way to a parking lot), or someone they care
about so deeply and why.  Giving them a
chance to choose and write about a topic that interests them may just bring out
their writing brilliance.
Some students would claim
that they cannot write.  They just do not
have the talent for it.  Wrong.  Kids who are offered lots of encouragement
and opportunities to complete their assigned essays usually gain confidence in
their writing.
When I was in high
school, I would take hours to write my essay during English class.
Scribbling a line from The Breakfast Club on my desk was much easier.  However, in my senior year, I was lucky to
have an English teacher who made us write from our hearts.  Some of her tips were to:
Explore.  Looking around can help a lot.  Inspiration can come from anyone, anything
and anywhere.

Read.  Reading and exposing yourselves to various
writing styles can help you come up with a writing style that is uniquely yours.

Create.  Once you start writing, just keep going.  Let all your ideas flow seamlessly.  Don’t worry if you don’t have all the details
yet.  It will come as the essay progresses.

Revise.   Your rough
draft does not need to be perfect.  Start
small and develop it, without fear of making changes that will make your essay
better.

Proofread. Check your
work for possible mistakes in grammar and spelling.  Some eclectic English teachers give their
kids plenty of opportunity to write in their own style, though, as long as it
is the best way to express their ideas.

I think I had some really good English teachers that encouraged the writer in me. It's important to give kids the space to write about whatever they're comfortable and not limit them to something too specific or narrow. Schools should foster their creativity.

I loved writing anything required. Even if I'm not a great writer. I hope my daughter loves to do it as well, as she is now beginning to blog and enjoy writing.

I was never a writer when I was kid. I'm more inclined to music. But someday, I would really encourage my kids to blog or write for the school paper.

I loved writing, even as a kid, and I was a better writer then than I am know. Haha. 🙂 These are good tips you shared. I really wanted to encourage my older nieces and nephews to love writing too but the blog writing project I had in mind for them didn't take off – I got as far as getting a domain and setting them up with their usernames but then my interest waned off. Sayang. hehe

I need to print this out. I will teach Filipino pagsulat too this school year. Plus I'm the adviser of the school paper. I hope this techniques will help my student's appreciate writing.

When kids think that doing something is required in school, they freak out! Teachers do need to churn out a myriad of writing prompts to encourage their students to write from their hearts. Also, writing something verbatim is really hard. We used to memorize long Chinese sentences and to answer the questions in tests using these sentences. I would break the monotony by using my own words, though, and I'm glad I passed. Haha!

Ako talaga I love writing. I think since birth na, I loved writing. Haha. Seriously, I remember writing poems and stories when I was 5 or 6. But I agree that children should not be forced to write. It should come naturally. Freewriting is still the best. This is another reason why I'm considering homeschool talaga.

My kids too don't really love to write as much as I do but I do get them to do journals and essays every week so that they get use to writing.

I thought my son doesn't like to write, but he loves to write pala. Ayaw nya lang ng plain pencil, he wants those with colors. I just let him write what he wants and I am just so happy to see my two-year old writing what's on his mind. Kahit minsan di ko maintindihan. Hopefully he will love to write too. Honestly, I hate writing before. I was never good at it until now naman, haha. But right, inspiration makes us want to write.

I started to make a blog for kids at school. And I am surprised by the posts I have seen. The kids really know how to write and express themselves. I think a little push and encouragement and they can be having their own blogs one day.
