If you’re looking to help your child to see and experience the benefits of good behavior, then you might look into using a reward chart with consistency. A reward chart can be an excellent addition to your home, especially if your child thrives on praise.
If you’re looking to follow the general rules and principles that come with a positive reinforcement strategy, then your child is going to be taught to be motivated by good words rather than by negative behaviors. With that in mind, let’s take a look at why a reward chart is a great idea for your home.

Children love stickers. Whether you go with the standard Gold Star or you choose to invest in some 3D stickers, you can really excite your child with the idea of sticking stickers onto a reward chart to praise their behavior. Stickers and reward charts are tangible options and they are good visual aids to show children that their behavior has been positive that day. The more stickers they have, the more they can grow towards the prize and children love to be able to follow that pattern.
You will get a chance to enhance their self esteem. When you are paying attention to your children’s good behavior rather than concentrating on the bad ones. Children will feel better about themselves and therefore they’re self-esteem will grow. They will see themselves as appreciated and experience that sense of accomplishment that they are looking to experience as they work towards and achieve their goals with you. When you recognise them at every turn, their self-image will improve.
Children want to become independent. When you choose to have a reward chart in the house, children get a chance to exercise that need for independence. Older children can read the types of things you’d like to achieve on the reward chart and they will go out of their way without being asked to be able to achieve it. Behavior charts mean that they have a visual to see how well they are doing. It’s not necessarily about taking things away.
You strengthen your relationship. Children can get trapped into the pattern of poor behavior and that gets stuck in the negative cycle. Instead of being stuck in a negative reinforcement cycle, continue to lean into the positive behavior reinforcement. Those positive behavior strategies that you’ve been using until now may have been working, but you’ll see the difference in your child almost immediately when they realize that a sticker on their reward chart leads to something even better. Instead of leaning into negative reinforcement, you can go ahead and continue with positive reinforcement and everybody benefits as a result.
Children get to work towards a goal. Children need something to thrive with and if you can give them a target and an aim, they will feel excited about that. This is the kind of excitement that’s going to help you and your household be a calmer and happier place.
