Do You Pull Your Hair Out?
This is a sponsored post. All opinions are mine.
I pulled my hair a lot when I was a kid.
And I still do now…
- When I’m reading a book,
- When I’m balancing a worksheet,
- When I am stressed.
I have trichotillomania.
What is trichotillomania?
Actually, trichotillomania – or hair pulling – is so common, but it is a condition nobody wants to talk about. It’s because if people know I pull my hair, they would think of me as self-destructive, disgusting, not in control.
I haven’t actually lost tufts of hair, but I know I really have to stop. I have read that trichotillomania is a habit, worse, it was described as an addiction.
But there are things you can do to help you stop pulling your hair out. Here are:
TIPS TO OVERCOME TRICHOTILLOMANIA
1. Spot Your triggers and Keep Your Hand Away From Your Hair.
Spot the danger times when you will likely pull your hair. My trigger is when I am stressed. Every time I am late for work or my teenage daughter is home late or my tween son is insisting on going home alone, it’s as if pulling my hair is some sort of release, like an alternative to doing something destructive.
- Whenever you feel like pulling your hair out, write it down and do an alternative activity that would make you feel better. I have found that typing on my laptop, even commenting on facebook , cooking, sipping warm tea or coffee, make my fingers busy and away from my poor hair.
2. Do an alternative activity.
There are times I was tempted to pull my hair but didn’t.
Like when I am in public (because, hello, it is a secret thing I do ) or cooking (because it is gross when you are reaching out for your hair and cooking at the same time).
- Get into the habit of doing an alternative activity when you have an intense urge to pull your hair out.
3. Do you pull your hair on impulse? Deal with it.
Sometimes, I pull my hair even without a trigger. With some people, wearing bracelets kind of helped, especially if the bracelets make a sound, because this helps them to be aware that they are pulling their hair.
A friend stopped pulling her hair because she decided to ironically use a wig!
- I realize it does make sense. You won’t attempt to pull your hair out when you have a wig, right?
Speaking of wigs, did you know that wigs have come a long way? All wigs from bobbi boss all look natural.
I really love this one:
…and if gorgeous curls are your thing, you will love this:

4. Find time to relax.
The mind can do awesome things, including making you finally stop from pulling your hair!
- Visualize yourself trying to pull your hair, and then alternatively, imagine how gorgeous your hair would be if your finally stopped pulling it out.
Take time to do this every single day!
